Garcia unifies lightweight titles with Easter victory
Mikey Garcia stayed undefeated after defeating Robert Easter Jr. on points at the Staples Center on Saturday.
Mikey Garcia continued his dominance of the world's lightweight divisions as he took down Robert Easter Jr. in Los Angeles.
Saturday's showdown at the Staples Center went in favour of Garcia 118-109, 117-110, and 116-111 after 12 rounds as the unbeaten American unified the WBC and IBF titles.
Garcia (39-0, 30 KOs) maintained his perfect record as he continuously controlled Easter (21-1, 14 KOs) with his jab throughout the night.
Easter came in with a good plan, attempting to stay on the outside and use his length to stop Garcia, who took some time to figure out and he eventually dropped the 27-year-old with a massive left hook in the third round.
American opponent Easter recovered, but Garcia controlled the fight the remainder of the night.
For good measure, Garcia called out welterweight titleholder Errol Spence Jr. after the fight, asking him for a matchup which would pit two of the world's greatest pound-for-pound fighters against each other.
"I'm here for the biggest challenges," Garcia said. "I don't know if there is anybody else who is a bigger challenge than Errol Spence Jr. If we are going to fight [it will be] at welterweight and I want to challenge myself to the fullest. I know he's up to fight any fighter so that's what I want.
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I think that's the next big fight that can be made. I feel that I have the power and the skill set to compete in any division up to welterweight. He's the toughest guy at welterweight, the most feared man, so I want to challenge myself against him."
