Perez awarded World Series MVP honours
For the first time since 1992, a catcher was named the World Series MVP as Salvador Perez took the prize.
Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez was named the World Series MVP after enjoying a fine series at the plate and behind it.
Perez, 25, became the first catcher to earn World Series MVP honours since Blue Jays standout Pat Borders in 1992.
Perez went one-for-five in the clinching game five, won 7-2 by the Royals against the New York Mets to win the series at Citi Field on Sunday.
He put into play the ball that Lucas Duda overthrew in the top of the ninth inning, scoring Eric Hosmer and tying the game at 2-2.
Perez also started the five-run rally in the 12th with a single to right field.
He collected eight hits, three runs scored and two RBIs in the series.
He started behind the plate for Kansas City in all 16 post-season games, hitting at an average of .259 with four home runs.
