No problems for host Lawrie in Aberdeen
Host Paul Lawrie avoided an early upset at his match-play event in Aberdeen on Thursday.
Paul Lawrie produced an solid opening round to defeat Romain Wattel - joining the likes of Marc Warren and Richie Ramsay in the second round of the inaugural Paul Lawrie Match Play event.
At a gusty Murcar Links Golf Club, 1999 Open champion Lawrie built up a three-hole lead thru six with the help of two early bogeys at the first and fourth.
Lawrie never looked like departing his own tournament early - standing firm for a 5&4 victory.
Five birdies and an eagle helped Warren to a one-hole win over England's Richard Bland while Ramsay claimed a one-hole victory against Shiv Kapur courtesy of a remarkable comeback.
Ramsay shot a course-record 61 at Murcar Links in 2006 and was forced to dig deep on Thursday after finding himself three down after seven holes.
"The most pleasing thing is playing well under pressure. There is no better feeling," Ramsay told the European Tour website.
"To birdie the last two, and then obviously down the last with the local guys on the green was great.
"And I can call upon that in the rest of the round and maybe sharpen up the game this afternoon, ready for round two."
Joining him on Friday will be Graeme Storm - whose birdie at the 18th downed Andrew Johnston - Nicolas Colsaerts, Alexander Levy and Eduardo Molinari.
However, the colourful John Daly saw his competition ended at the first hurdle - the American losing to Jorge Campillo by two holes.
Daly bogeyed the fifth and the 17th before rolling a putt at the 18th two feet beyond the hole to concede at the last.
