World champion Marc Marquez delivered an imperious display to take pole at the British MotoGP on Saturday.
The Repsol Honda rider demolished the lap record as he finished 0.288 seconds clear of second-placed Jorge Lorenzo.
Marquez is playing catch-up in this season's standings, but is steadily putting himself back in contention to retain his title after four podium finishes on the bounce.
And the Spaniard was dominant from the off in Q2 at Silverstone, breaking the previous lap record with his first flying lap.
Dani Pedrosa then went second fastest behind his team-mate, who subsequently knocked another third of a second off his time.
Current championship leader Lorenzo eventually wrestled second spot back from Pedrosa, while fellow Movistar Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi left it late to clinch fourth.
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 duo Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith qualified fifth and sixth respectively, ahead of EG 0,0 Marc VDS's Scott Redding and Cal Crutchlow of LCR Honda.
