Canucks sign Sutter to five-year extension
Vancouver Canucks recruit Brandon Sutter has signed a long-term extension with the NHL franchise through to the end of the 2020-21 season.
The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward Brandon Sutter to a five-year contract extension with an average annual salary of $4.375 million, general manager Jim Benning announced on Tuesday.
Vancouver acquired Sutter in a trade with NHL rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins last week, which also saw the Canucks receive a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft in exchange for centre Nick Bonino, defenseman Adam Clendening and a second-round pick next year.
Sutter was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent as he entered the final year of his two-year contract, but the Canucks have retained the player through to the end of the 2020-21 season.
The 26-year-old tallied 33 points with 21 goals and 12 assists in 80 games with the Penguins last season.
Sutter's goals tied a single-season career-high and it was the sixth consecutive season he had recorded 10 goals or more. He also finished with a team-leading 50.6 percent faceoff efficiency and tied for second in the league with four short-handed goals.
He has recorded 98 goals, 87 assists and 94 penalty minutes in 495 career NHL games with the Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes. He added eight goals and four assists in 33 play-off games with Pittsburgh.
