The Australian overcame Matteo Berrettini 6-1 7-6 (7-4) to claim his 53rd win of the season in the Austrian capital, setting up a meeting with world No.2 Sinner.
In 11 previous meetings, De Minaur is yet to register a victory, the pair's most recent meeting ending in a 6-3 4-6 6-2 win for Sinner at the Beijing Open, where Sinner went on to win the title.
But De Minaur is in a rare vein of good form right now. Only Carlos Alcaraz has recorded more victories on Tour in 2025 than the 26 year old.
De Minaur has also reached four ATP 500 semi-finals this year, tying Alcaraz for the most appearances at that stage, and the Australian won the ATP 500 title in Washington.
De Minaur recovered from squandering a match point on serve at 5-4 against Berrettini, eventually prevailing in the second-set tiebreak to improve to 2-3 in his head-to-head with this particular Italian.
He is seventh in theworld rankings, 500 points ahead of ninth-placed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who retired from his quarter-final match at the Swiss Indoors Basel.
De Minaur is chasing his second appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, and a first win against Sinner would certainly help his cause.
