French Open: Sabalenka into third round after straight-sets win over Jacquemot
Aryna Sabalenka will face Daria Kasatkina in the third round of the French Open, having won back-to-back matches in straight sets.
Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the third round of the French Open with a 7-5 6-2 victory over home favourite Elsa Jacquemot on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Last year's Roland-Garros runner-up was pushed hard by Jacquemot in a 55-minute opening set, but her class ultimately showed as she advanced in just over an hour-and-a-half.
Having faced real pressure on her serve early on, Sabalenka got the opening break in the third game, only for Jacquemot to immediately get the set back on serve.
However, Sabalenka's power proved too much as she got the decisive break in game 12, and the Belarusian was comfortable after breaking again in game two of the second.
Jacquemot hit back after going a double break down, but the 23-year-old only delayed the inevitable as Sabalenka immediately broke again to seal the deal, tempting her opponent towards the net for an error on match point.
Sabalenka will now face Daria Kasatkina for a place in the fourth round, having maintained her record of reaching at least the third round at every grand slam since the 2020 Australian Open.
Data Debrief: Sabalenka sees off another home hopeful
Sabalenka's win on Thursday was her 31st at a grand slam while ranked number one in the world.
This century, the only players on the WTA Tour to achieve more such victories are Serena Williams (124), Iga Swiatek (48), Martina Hingis (36) and Justine Henin (34).
In addition, Sabalenka has won 14 of her 16 grand slam matches against opponents playing in their home country, with her only such defeats coming against Ashleigh Barty (at the 2018 Australian Open) and Coco Gauff (2023 US Open).
