The French Open winner prevailed 6-3 7-6 (7-4) in the all-German affair in front of their home crowd, and will face either Raphael Collignon or Mattia Bellucci in the last eight.
There was not much to split the pair in the opening set, though Zverev managed to find a breakthrough in the eighth game, converting the only break point of the first.
Zverev looked to build on his momentum in the second, but missed a break point opportunity in the third game as Hanfmann looked to mount a comeback.
There were six holds to love in the second set as neither player gave anything away on serve, forcing a tie-break to settle the matter.
Much like the match, the tie-break was also a tight call, with Zverev taking only one of Hanfmann's service points to secure victory.
