The Australian two-time Libema Open finalist moved to 3-1 head-to-head with Kovacevic and will take renewed confidence into his clash with Diallo, who beat another Australian, Aleksandar Vukic, 7-5 7-6, to set up the Thompson clash.
“Two finals is heartbreaking, so hopefully I can just keep going like I did today, and give myself another chance,” Thompson said when asked if it was too early to start thinking of another appearance in the championship match.
In the day's other match, Nicolas Jarry channeled his fighting spirit for a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(3) win over eighth seed Luciano Darderi in the first round at the grass-court ATP 250 event.
Jarry trailed by a set and a break and saved four break points at 4-4 in the third set, before prevailing after two hours, 30 minutes.
Jarry has slipped to No. 150 in the ATP Rankings after a topsy-turvy start to the season, during which he has posted a 6-12 record. The Chilean boasts a career-high World No. 16, but has been unable to defend recent points, notably at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome, where he reached the final last year before falling in the second round last month.
