The world No.8, who is the No.3 seed in Rotterdam, was tested with five break points across the contest, saving four of them, and he ultimately showed his class and superiority by putting the German away, breaking the world No.93 four times in a contest that lasted just less than 90 minutes.
“It felt like a battle with the opponent, the conditions, a little bit of everything,” De Minaur said after the match. “I’m happy I managed to get up for it and play some good tennis, and dig very deep when I needed to.”
De Minaur was a finalist at this tournament last year and his quest to reach this year's showpiece may have been made a little easier with Stefanos Tsitsipas losing his quarter-final in another huge upset at this tournament.
The Greek was beaten by world No.92 Mattia Bellucci, who is on a giant-killing spree having already seen off world No.7 Daniel Medvedev in the previous round, and he saw off world No.12 Tsitsipas with an impressive 6-4 6-2 win.
Whether the Italian can carry his remarkable form into the clash with De Minaur remains to be seen, but De Minaur will not want to become his next victim.
It will be the first meeting between the pair on the ATP Tour, with Bellucci aiming for his first final at this level while the Australian looks to go back-to-back.
