Wolfsburg 5-2 Manchester United: Peddemors and Beerensteyn at the double in Women's Champions League rout
Manchester United suffered their first defeat in the Women's Champions League this season, going down in heavy fashion at Wolfsburg.
Ella Peddemors and Lineth Beerensteyn were at the double as Wolfsburg dispatched Manchester United 5-2 in the Women's Champions League.
United went into Wednesday's clash unbeaten across their opening three Champions League matches this season, and Fridolina Rolfo's 14th-minute opener put them on the front foot.
Yet Wolfsburg turned the game on its head as Peddemors netted twice before Beerensteyn made it 3-1 in the 45th minute.
Melvine Malard, who had set up Rolfo's goal, dragged United back into it on the stroke of half-time, but two-time European champions Wolfsburg took the match away from Marc Skinner's team after the break.
Beerensteyn doubled her tally in the 65th minute, drilling home after she got the better of Dominique Janssen.
Gabrielle George squandered a decent chance to pull United back to within one goal, but Wolfsburg added further gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time, as Vivien Endemann finished coolly after pouncing on Jayde Riviere's poor pass.
Wolfsburg move up to second in the standings, two places ahead of United, while record winners Lyon nudged themselves out in front by maintaining their unbeaten start by fighting back from 3-0 down to claim a 3-3 draw at Juventus.
Juve looked on course for a shock victory when Chiara Beccari, Michela Cambiaghi and Tatiana Pinto netted in the first half.
Yet Tabitha Chawinga's goal on the hour gave Lyon hope before Marie-Antoinette Katoto's 79th-minute effort paved the way for Wendie Renard to equalise via a late penalty.
Data Debrief: Comeback queens
Lyon have now taken four points from losing positions in the Champions League this season, which is a tally bettered only by Juve (six).
They will feel worthy of the point, though, given they had a whopping 26 shots and accumulated 2.79 expected goals to Juve's 1.25.
Beerensteyn and Peddemors, meanwhile, were the standout performers for Wolfsburg. Indeed, the duo account for eight of their team's 13 attempts, while getting five of those on target between them.
