Gakpo withdraws from Netherlands squad with ankle injury
Cody Gakpo has returned to Liverpool and is unavailable for the Netherlands' last two Nations League games after suffering an ankle injury.
The forward sustained the issue in Netherlands's 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday and was substituted after just 17 minutes after a hard tackle.
After the game, Xavi said he did not think the injury was serious, but after tests, Gakpo has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad.
Nobody has been called up to replace him for the remaining two games of the international break.
Liverpool confirmed Gakpo would undergo further assessment at their training centre but did not say how long he was expected to be sidelined.
It is a blow for the Dutchman, who has made a strong start to the season after being linked with a transfer away from Anfield to Tottenham and Manchester City this summer.
He has already racked up six goal involvements in all competitions – two goals and four assists – more than any other player for the club.
His 13 chances created, meanwhile, are second only to Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool return to action against City on 11 October.
