Rohl ‘angry’ at second-half display as Rangers face Europa League elimination
Danny Rohl could not hide his displeasure at Rangers' performance as their Europa League hopes faded after a 2-1 loss to Ferencvaros.
Danny Rohl was furious with Rangers’ performance in the second half as they were all but eliminated from the Europa League after a 2-1 loss to Ferencvaros on Thursday.
It all started so well for the Gers as they took the lead through Bojan Miovski’s acrobatic volley, which was initially disallowed for offside but overturned following a VAR review.
Rangers were unable to hang onto this lead as Bence Otvos struck in first-half stoppage time, and they fell to another defeat in Europe after Barnabas Varga headed home in the 72nd minute to score his 20th goal of the season.
Apart from an effort on goal from substitute Findlay Curtis, Rangers struggled to produce anything of note in attack during the second half, and Rohl was disappointed with how his side fared in Budapest.
He said: “Second half, we missed so many transition moments, and the second goal was too easy. These are the parts at the moment where we are not clinical enough.
"Honestly, I'm very angry about our conceded goals. This is the disappointment for me.
"I am angry about two or three mistakes, this is hard to take."
Rangers have now lost their last four away games in major European competitions, only enduring longer runs in their history in October 2023 (seven), September 1964 and October 1986 (both five).
Rohl’s men must beat Ludogorets and Porto in their final two matches and hope other results turn in their favour to have any chance of making the play-offs, but even seven points is unlikely to be enough.
The German refused to discuss his side’s fading European prospects but wants them to learn from their mistakes as they attempt to climb the Scottish Premiership table.
"What happens in the next two games is not a topic for me today,” said Rohl. “We will see what happens in this competition.
“From tomorrow, we have to focus on big games in the league.”
Miovski’s goal makes it three goals across his last two games in all competitions, with the North Macedonian having only netted twice in his previous 18 matches for the club.
But he was forced off with an injury at the midway point of the second half, and Rohl was unsure about the severity of the issue.
He said: "Bojan got a kick, but it could be a bit more."
Rangers’ next match sees them host Hibernian at Ibrox on Monday.
