With his team leading 4-0 and cruising towards a place in the UEFA Champions League group stages, maligned Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez was handed a prime opportunity to state his case to retain a spot at the club, when the Red Devils were given a penalty in the 82nd-minute. 

What happened next will be the stuff of blooper reels for years to come, as the Mexican scuffed his foot on a blade of grass and sent his penalty wide.

United manager Louis van Gaal could barely hide his disgust as he traded a glance with assistant Ryan Giggs that suggested Hernandez will be the next player to call United his former home. 

To make matters worse, the pint-sized marksman missed another chance barely ten minutes later, sending his volleyed shot high and wide.

Compounding matters for Hernandez was Wayne Rooney's stunning return to form, his second UEFA Champions League hat-trick propelling United back to Europe's top table.
