Gilmour ready to put Napoli back on top again
Billy Gilmour is playing his third season for Napoli, after getting an offer he could not refuse from the club in 2024 while he was at Brighton and Hove Albion.
Gilmour spent two years with the Seagulls before making the move to Napoli in August 2024, signing a five-year contract with the Serie A club.
He has made 52 appearances for the Partenopei in all competitions and won the Scudetto in his first season at the club, under Antonio Conte.
The midfielder scored the first goal of his club career last term, netting in a 3-2 win over Pisa, and he has also hit the back of the net in 2026-2027, in a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina.
"It's an exciting league,” Gilmour said.
"When you have these big clubs from Italy who approach and say they want to sign you, it's very hard to say no.
"I wanted to come here; I wanted to challenge for trophies and be at such a great club."
Gilmour signed for Napoli on the same day as Scotland team-mate Scott McTominay, who has taken Napoli by storm since his debut.
McTominay was named Serie A's most valuable player in 2025 for his part in Napoli's Scudetto success, while he has been named in the league's team of the year in both of his seasons so far.
The 29-year-old has made 82 appearances, scoring 27 goals, but he is currently sidelined after heart surgery to correct a mild cardiac arrhythmia.
He is expected to return after the international break.
"Since he's been here, Scott's confidence has grown massively," Gilmour said.
"You can see how much he means to the fans and to us as players; we can rely on him whenever we need a goal and need help. The same goes for Scotland.
"We're missing Scott now, and hopefully things went well; we can't wait to have him back."
