Villa boosts UCL hopes against toothless Spurs
Aston Villa climbed into the UEFA Champions League places after a crucial 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
With Manchester City in FA Cup final action this weekend, Unai Emery's side took full advantage at Villa Park as goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara helped them leapfrog the Citizens into the top five.
Konsa opened the scoring just before the hour mark at Villa Park, getting his second league goal of the season with a deft finish after Ollie Watkins nodded John McGinn's deep corner into the six-yard box.
Kamara's first goal in the competition then secured the hosts' ninth win in 11 league games, the midfielder cutting inside from the right, before drilling past Antonin Kinsky in the 73rd minute.
That condemned a toothless Spurs, who registered just one shot on target, to a 21st top-flight defeat this season.
Villa climbed to fourth place but will drop to fifth if Chelsea beats Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, while Ange Postecoglou's side remains a dismal 17th.
Emery acknowledged Villa must beat Manchester United on the final day of the season and hope for favours from elsewhere to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League, where it reached the quarter-finals this term.
"I am very happy," the Spaniard said. "Today, we closed out our season here with our supporters trying to transmit our energy.
"We won, but there is still work to do to have a chance to play in the Champions League. We have to try and keep the inconsistencies down and focus.
"Spurs competed well and did a fantastic job. We were speaking at half-time about the difficulties we were facing, and to be consistent and demanding in our game plan."
Meanwhile, Konsa spoke of the players' desire to compete in Europe's premier club competition for a second season in succession.
The defender, who scored only his second Premier League goal of the season, also told of how the opener came as a result of hard work behind the scenes.
"We worked on that specific corner, and it came off," Konsa added. "We knew we had to score early in the second half and give the fans something to cheer for.
"We knew today was a must-win. We want to play [UEFA] Champions League football again. We knew Tottenham had a final on Wednesday [Thursday AEST against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League], but we needed to stay focused and win.
"We had a taste of it this season, and, for us as players, it's a competition you want to play in. It's the main goal for us going into the last game.
"It's not in our hands as yet, but we'll do all we can."
