Kane is irreplaceable but Ange says Son is shining
Ange Postecoglou believes it would've been impossible to 'replace Harry Kane like-for-like' at Tottenham Hotspur this year as he continues to bring the best out of Son Heung Min up front and prepares to reclaim top spot in the Premier League.
Son has scored nine goals this season – only Manchester City's prolific Erling Haaland has more with 11 – giving Spurs its best start to a season in years and its newly minted Australian coach a lengthening list of historic accolades.
Postecoglou's side remains the the only unbeaten side in the Premier League, and will look to regain top spot when it takes on Chelsea after falling a point behind City after it thrashed Bournemouth 6-1.
Spurs faces its former boss Mauricio Pochettino, now in charge at the Blues, who was sacked after failing to find the type of success Postecoglou has managed from this group of players, and many thought losing Kane would make life even more difficult for the north London side.
Kane has continued his incredible scoring form since moving to Bayern Munich, scoring three hat-tricks in his first 10 games in the Bundesliga and amassing a record tally of 15 goals for his new club.
But Postecoglou has shown there is life after Kane at Spurs, and he has transformed Son into a deadly asset up front.
“He scored against me in the Asian Cup in 2015, that was enough,” he said. “I saw enough to know that he’s a decent goalscorer. He’s always been a goal threat.
“Going into the transfer market and bringing in someone that was going to score 25-30 goals, I just don’t think that was realistic. [But Son's] got great capacity for working, pressing. I just thought he would be a really good fit for us here.
"He wasn’t the only option I was looking at but probably the best fit for where we are as a team and what we needed. The more he plays, the better he’ll get in terms of being a goal threat and he’s a massive asset to have.”
Chelsea boss Pochettino, meanwhile joked that he is confident he would not repeat Ron Atkinson’s gaffe of standing in the wrong dugout on his return to Spurs.
Atkinson unwittingly provided entertainment at The City Ground in 1999 when he mistakenly took his place in front of the away team’s bench in his first match since being appointed Nottingham Forest manager.
Pochettino was asked about that famous blunder ahead of going back to Spurs but initially confused veteran boss Atkinson with near-namesake Rowan Atkinson, creator of comedy character Mr Bean.
After the brief misunderstanding, the Argentinian, who managed Tottenham between 2014 and 2019, insisted he will not make a similar error as he helped design the layout of his former club’s stadium.
“Ah, Mr Bean? Ron Atkinson is the actor?”, Pochettino replied to the original question, before the mix-up was explained.
“Ah, OK, OK – I was thinking the actor. My wife will kill me! She will say, ‘I told you, remember that is the name’.
“No (I will not make the same mistake). I know very well the away dugout. I know very well because I designed where it was, I was there with the architect.
“On the right is the local (home) and the away is on the left.”
Pochettino is preparing for a special occasion on his first reunion with Tottenham since being sacked four years ago.
He holds fond memories of his spell, which included reaching the UEFA Champions League final just months before his dismissal.
Despite being desperate for victory, the 51-year-old rejected any notion of seeking revenge in response to the nature of his departure.
Mid-table Chelsea is in need of points to kickstart its season after just three Premier League wins from 10 games, while unbeaten Tottenham is among the early pacesetters.
“I want to win,” Pochettino, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer, said. “I want to beat them.
“But when I play with my kids, I want to beat them, or my dad, or my brothers, or my friends – I try to kill them.
“I want to win because we are competitive, I am competitive.
“It’s not a special thing. I don’t want to go there and (people) think it’s a revenge. For what?
“For me, it’s going to be important because we need to win, Chelsea need to win because we need the points.
“But not because it’s special because it’s against Tottenham.”
