Everton shines as Rosenior's Chelsea woes continue
Beto played a starring role with two goals and an assist as Everton boosted its European hopes and dented those of Chelsea with a crushing 3-0 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton climbed to seventh place on the Premier League table and went within two points of Liam Rosenior's under-fire side after a deserved win.
Beto almost capitalised on a giveaway from Robert Sanchez in the opening 10 minutes, but the Guinea-Bissau international opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, lobbing the Spaniard after latching on to a pinpoint throughball from James Garner.
Jordan Pickford denied Enzo Fernandez in spectacular fashion either side of half-time, first parrying the Argentine's close-range volley over the top, then springing to his left to turn a curling effort past the post.
Some poor goalkeeping at the other end saw Everton double its lead in the 62nd minute.
Beto fired straight at Sanchez after being fed by Idrissa Gueye, and the Chelsea man let the ball squirm between his legs and over the line.
Estevao hit the crossbar directly from a corner as Chelsea grew desperate, but Everton killed the contest off in the 76th minute as Beto's flick-on found Iliman Ndiaye, who dribbled into the area before curling a shot into the top-right corner.
Chelsea has now lost four straight games in all competitions, failing to score in any of their past three.
Chelsea head coach Rosenior urged his players to block out the negative noise after another disappoinment.
"I'm learning about this club. It's a massive club," he said. "There's been a lot of noise, a lot of negative noise, rightfully so [after] our performances in the last week.
"We've had 10 games in the league together as a group. We've got 17 points. I think we're fourth in my time, so we have to forget the noise. We have to keep our confidence and our composure.
"The international break has probably come at a good time for us to restock, re-energise ourselves and go again for a really important run-in."
Meanwhile, Everton recorded back-to-back Premier League wins at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time, and hasa now won six of its past eight home league games against Chelsea.
"[The atmosphere] was the best I have seen it, and to top it off with a win was amazing," midfielder James Garner said. "We needed to sort out our form here, and may it long continue."
On receiving his England call-up just over 24 hours earlier, he added: "I'm so happy. I'm over the moon. It's a dream. It's been a crazy week, and to top it off with a win is even better."
With his brace, Beto became the Everton player to score two or more goals in a Premier League game at its new home, and the striker was thrilled by his side's performance.
"Today was a must-win game for us," he said. "Since we came out of the hotel, the fans were shouting. They were feeling like we needed to win this game, so we did a great performance; three goals, clean sheet. We are happy.
"I don't think I'm a hero. I feel like I'm home. Playing for Everton is something unbelievable. You just want to give your all and help the team with goals, assists, good performances, anything. I'm really happy."
