Salford City takes slender play-off advantage
Salford City will take a narrow advantage into the second leg of its League Two play-off semi-final after edging a lively encounter with Grimsby Town.
The host side made an electric start, opening the scoring inside the first minute when Reece Staunton produced a superb long-range volley to give the Mariners an early lead.
Salford responded well and were back on level terms within four minutes, as Kallum Cesay showed composure inside the penalty area to guide his finish past Jackson Smith.
The momentum continued to swing before the interval and the Ammies moved ahead shortly before the break, Adebola Oluwo rising highest to head home from close range following a set-piece.
Grimsby enjoyed spells of possession after the restart and pushed for an equaliser, but Salford remained organised defensively and limited the hosts to few clear-cut chances as the game wore on.
Despite seeing plenty of the ball in the second half, the Mariners were unable to find a way through, as Salford held firm to secure a one-goal advantage ahead of the return leg.
