David says Atletico move improved his form
Jonathan David is in fine form for club and country, and he credits his move to Atletico Madrid as a key reason for his change in fortune.
The 26-year-old joined Diego Simeone's side on a season-long loan from Juventus on deadline day, with Atletico reportedly having the option to make the move permanent for €25 million ($40.5 million).
David struggled at Juve last term, scoring eight goals across 46 appearances and providing five assists, although he has enjoyed a much better start to life in LaLiga.
The Canada international has scored three goals in as many games for Atleti, bagging a goal in each of his three LaLiga appearances.
Before the international window, in which he has already scored the winner in Canada's 1-0 victory over Peru, David netted the match-defining goal in a 2-1 win in the Madrid derby.
"Maybe it’s a breath of fresh air. Maybe it helps that it’s a bit of a change of environment," David said when asked about his recent form.
"I play with a lot of players that have that quality to find the last pass. They make it pretty simple for me, to be honest. All I have to do is finish."
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch also revealed he played a small role in David's transfer to Atleti.
"I know Simeone from playing against him, from watching him over the years," Marsch said.
"[I said to him] if you want an attacking player that can score goals, has a lot of quality, and also [to] work for the team and give everything he has to the team, I can't think of a better striker than Jonathan David."
