Marsch wants more from Canada after win over Chile

Canada edged to a 1-0 victory over its nine-man opponent in a friendly at BMO Field despite dominating for large parts of the match.

Jonathan David scored the winner in the 12th minute. Jacob Schaffelburg's cross was met by Cyle Larin, who saw his shot saved, but it rebounded off him to David, who coolly tapped home.

Lucas Cepeda was then shown a straight red card 35 minutes in after a high boot on Richie Laryea.

Gabriel Suazo also made an early exit, receiving his second booking five minutes after the break – his first was for dissent before his late foul on Niko Sigur.

Canada pushed to try and make the most of its advantage in the second half, but could not get a second goal.

Marsch wants to see an improvement as it continues to build on its Round of 16 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"Chile makes it hard," Marsch said. "I don't think [our] second half was very good.

"Chile remained aggressive even down two men. The way to make them pay was to be cleaner with the ball and cleaner with ideas and actions around the goal.

"We were too wild, not enough shots on frame, not enough final actions with good connections."

Canada also hit the woodwork twice, with Laryea and Jamie Knight-Lebel going close in the final six minutes of the 90.

Larin was a constant threat for them, having a game-high four shots, 12 touches in the opposition box.

"Every game we play is a must-win," Larin said.

"You don't come here to play and just to draw or get a result."
