Cyle Larin believes Canada "showed the world" who they are with their 6-0 thrashing of Qatar on Thursday.

Larin opened the scoring in an emphatic win at BC Place Vancouver, with Jonathan David also scoring a hat-trick for Canada as they earned their first-ever win at the World Cup.

After also scoring off the bench against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening group game, Larin is the first Canadian player to score multiple goals at a single World Cup.

Canada's six goals were the most ever scored in a World Cup match by a Concacaf nation, besting the four goals scored by Mexico (1970 v El Salvador) and the United States (2026 v Paraguay), and the most ever scored in a World Cup match by a nation from outside Europe or South America.

Canada are now top of group A, and Larin claims their best is still yet to come.

"We showed the world who Canada is," said the striker.

"A lot of players came from nowhere, basically. We showed the fight we have in us. And we showed that we can perform on the world stage. We are just getting started."

Canada were dealt a blow in the second half as Ismael Kone was stretchered off after a suspected leg break, following a challenge from Assim Madibo, who was sent off.

"Ismael Kone's injury hurts and was emotional, but we went back out there and got the job done," Larin added.

"Switzerland are around the corner and the job is not finished.

"I think we can do way better and we will have Kone in the back of our mind and do it for him."

Madibo was Qatar's second red card of the match, after Homam El Amin was given his marching orders for a last-man foul on Tajon Buchanan.

Qatar became the first AFC team to receive two red cards in a single match in World Cup history. The six total red cards shown in this year’s edition are the most in a single World Cup since 2014 (10).

"It was a very tough match for many reasons," Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui said.

"The players did their best. It was very difficult to face this match with two players less with this environment."
