Tuchel fears worst for Jordan Henderson after slip
England looks almost certain to have lost Jordan Henderson to a serious arm injury sustained in the post-match celebrations after winning an epic Round of 16 clash with Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Henderson was seen tripping over advertising hoardings behind the goal where England fans were celebrating in the wake of the 3-2 win at Azteca Stadium, a victory that has put England through to a quarter-final clash with Norway next weekend.
The midfielder didn't get up and appeared in some distress as team-mates quickly came to his aid and waved for the medical team to come and assess the situation.
He was later taken from the field on a stretcher while being administered oxygen as a concerned group of players and England staff helped him to the changing rooms.
When asked about the incident, England manager Thomas Tuchel didn't sound optimistic.
"Oh it's not good, not good," he said while talking to British broadcaster ITV in the tunnel, having praised his team for its efforts after losing right back Jarell Quansah to a red card early in the second half.
"It's the next thing [to deal with], now we have a right defender with a red card, and Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It's looks really bad."
It remains unclear exactly what the injury is, but footage suggested a bone may have been broken in either Henderson's wrist or elbow area after his left hand slipped on the hoardings as he tried to hurdle over them, causing him to land very awkwardly as he tried to break the impact with the same arm.
A broken bone would almost certainly end his FIFA World Cup experience early. Tuchel confirmed it was the wrist later at his post-match press conference.
"I have mixed feelings also because I am exhausted and emotional and sad because Jordan got injured and injured his wrist," he said.
"He is at the moment in the hospital. It is quite a serious injury. It just doesn't fit the evening that Jordan is not with us."
England scored two goals in as many minutes through Jude Bellingham before Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico to make it 2-1 at the half-time break in what was an astonishing match in Mexico City.
Quansah was sent of early nine minutes into the second half, but Harry Kane put England 3-1 ahead from the spot on the hour after Anthony Gordon won a penalty with England down to 10 men.
But a penalty conceded by England's captain at the other end was converted by Mexico's Raul Jimenez, putting England under severe pressure for what remained of the game, which was 21 minutes plus an extra 11 minutes added for stoppages.
But the Three Lions held out for a famous win, handing Mexico just its third defeat in history at the Azteca and its first since 2013.
England also scored the first goals against Mexico of this tournament, but the loss of Henderson will no doubt slightly sour the mood in the camp as it prepares to take on a Norway side that upset Brazil 2-1 in its Round of 16 clash earlier in the day.
