Fermin to miss World Cup for Spain with foot injury
Fermin Lopez confirmed he will not be playing at the 2026 World Cup after having successful surgery on a fractured foot.
Fermin was taken off at half-time during Barcelona's 3-1 win over Real Betis, with the club announcing the injury after the game.
The Spaniard has been a key figure in Hansi Flick's side this season on its way to winning the LaLiga title, making 48 appearances in all competitions, with only Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin (both 50) playing more.
Fermin has also registered the joint-most assists (17, level with Lamine Yamal), while also scoring 13 goals.
"The surgery went very well, and I'm already thinking about coming back stronger, both physically and mentally," Fermin, who made three appearances in Spain's World Cup qualifying campaign, said in a post on social media.
"Life and football can be cruel when you least expect or deserve it, but you have to accept that it's all part of the journey. It's a very tough time for me, and another challenge in my career that I will overcome; have no doubt about it.
"Now it's time to support the national team and my team-mates from home.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone for your support and kind messages."
Luis de la Fuente is set to name his squad on 25 May, with Spain playing two friendlies against Iraq and Peru before kicking off their tournament against Cape Verde on 15 June.
The European giant will also face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
