Robertson stunner sees Liverpool past Wolves
Andy Robertson's stunning second-half strike led Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round.
The left-back's first Liverpool goal from outside the box got things started after the break, before Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones made sure of their progression at Molineux, where it lost in the Premier League in midweek.
It was a quiet first half, with Wolves failing to register a single shot in the opening 45 minutes, while Cody Gakpo did hit the post for Liverpool, but he was in an offside position.
But the floodgates were opened after 51 minutes as Robertson received the ball close to 25 yards out and arrowed his powerful strike into the bottom-right corner, leaving Sam Johnstone with no chance in the Wolves goal.
It was 2-0 two minutes later. Robertson's cross was turned in by Salah, who was initially denied by the linesman's flag but was awarded his goal after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
Jones then ensured Wolves would not make a comeback in this match, drifting past two challenges before curling an effort past Johnstone with his weaker left foot in the 74th minute, though Hwang Hee-chan was able to score a consolation in stoppage-time.
Robertson, who turns 32 next week, has found himself on the periphery of the first team this season because of the arrival of Milos Kerkez, but he says that he understands he will play fewer minutes at this stage of his career.
"I'm not sure if I have a point to prove in a Liverpool shirt, the fans know I give everything in a Liverpool shirt," he said.
"When you get on the pitch you just want to enjoy it. It is what it is. Milos is a fantastic left back.
"He had an unbelievable season last season at Bournemouth. It took time to settle into a big club.
"The club has to move forward, the lads who have been here so long are not getting any younger. You have to accept it. I have had competition my whole career."
The Reds' Premier League title defence has been hugely underwhelming, but it is still competing in the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Robertson added: "It's a bit more like it. We know we let ourselves down on Tuesday [Wednesday AEDT]. It was not the performance we expect from ourselves.
"It was up to us to go and put it right. The FA Cup is do or die.
"I couldn't have hit it [the goal] much better. It opened up and, thankfully, I hit it clean. We are delighted to get through now.
"We are trying to fight on all fronts. We are still in two cup competitions. If we play like we did tonight, then nobody wants to play against us.
"We have to start showing that consistency. It is one step forward and two steps back."
There were just 95 seconds between Liverpool's first and second goals, and Wolves boss Rob Edwards felt that is what really cost his side in this fifth-round tie.
"I think Liverpool are a bit good aren't they? I thought we saw the best version of them today," he said.
"Credit where credit's due they deserved it, they were better. We gave everything but we couldn't find a way to counter-attack.
"I think the killer moment for us, because even at 1-0 down we're still in the game, I think the timing of that second goal straight from our kick-off was a killer and it almost sealed it for us tonight.
"It's the one thing I'm annoyed about tonight because anything can happen. We got a goal late, if we're still in it in those later stages you never know.
"But I thought they were outstanding, I can't fault our players but there's levels, and they were at a very high level tonight."
