Neymar absent as Santos falls short
Brazil selection Neymar was a notable absentee for Santos as it was held to a 2-2 draw by San Lorenzo that ends its chances of direct qualification for the last-16 out of Group D in the Copa Sudamericana.
With Neymar nursing a sore right calf, his club opted not to risk his fitness during the match. Despite his absence, the home side raced to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Gabriels, Bontempo and Barbosa.
The group-leading Argentinian side hit back twice in quick succession, midway through the second period to move to seven points ahead of the final match of the phase.
With only the group-winner progressing directly to the round of 16, Santos - in last on four points - is facing the prospect of a qualifying play-off.
The Brazilian club takes on Deportivo Cuenca - in second on six points - while San Lorenzo meets third-placed Recoleta - five points.
