Cruzeiro gobsmacked as Catolica claims famous win
Cruzeiro suffered a huge shock in the Copa Libertadores as Universidad Caolica produced a stunning 2-1 upset win at the Mineirao to leave Brazil with all three points from a fiercely contested Group D encounter.
The Brazilian host, buoyed by a sold-out home crowd, started the brighter.
Matheus Pereira came close twice before the half-hour mark, first forcing a strong save from Vicente Bernedo with a fierce drive, and then testing the goalkeeper again with a powerful free-kick.
The Chilean side, however, grew into the match and almost went ahead on 28 minutes when an effort hit both posts before the ball was cleared away.
The visitors were rewarded, though, when Justo Giani broke the deadlock a minute later with a bullet header from a corner, giving the visitors a deserved lead at the break.
Cruzeiro poured forward in the second half and Matheus Pereira levelled from the penalty spot on 60 minutes, restoring parity and lifting the Mineirao.
The hosts pushed for a winner and dominated possession, finishing the match with 63 per cent of possession and 16 shots to Catolica's nine, but deep into stoppage-time, Cruzerio's profligacy proved costly.
Jimmy Martínez struck in the fourth minute of time added on when he ghosted past the defence in the box, heading home to seal a famous victory for the Chilean side.
Cruzeiro, which had opened its campaign with a 1–0 win over Barcelona SC, will be rattled by the defeat, while Catolica, beaten by Boca Juniors on Matchday 1, bounced back emphatically to move above its opponent into second in the group bechind Boca.
