Watford sinks Wrexham to keep play-off hopes alive
Watford boosted its hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs, while denting those of Wrexham, with a 3-1 win at Vicarage Road.
Wrexham endured a poor first half, and though Max Cleworth gave it a lifeline in the second half, Edoardo Bove made sure of the three points late on for Watford.
Ed Still's side made a bright start, with Giorgi Chakvetadze curling an early effort off the crossbar, and it found their breakthrough 18 minutes in.
Chakvetadze picked out Marc Bola with a lovely back-heel, and the defender's drive deflected off Cleworth and past the helpless Arthur Okonkwo.
It doubled its lead with a stunning goal 20 minutes later as Edo Kayembe bent his effort from the edge of the 18-yard box past Okonkwo.
Wrexham made up for a lacklustre first half when Cleworth nodded Oliver Rathbone's corner into the net just four minutes after the break.
It had chances for an equaliser, but failed to take them, while Watford got its third in the 94th minute; after Bola rattled the crossbar, Bove was on hand to prod it into the empty net for his first Watford goal.
