Packed Hillsborough unable to get Wednesday a win
Sheffield Wednesday fans packed Hillsborough to support their club after it filed for administration on Friday, but a huge swell in support couldn't prevent the Owls from suffering a 2-1 loss to Oxford United in the EFL Championship.
Wednesday fans returned to Hillsborough after protests against Dejphon Chansiri's ownership, which is effectively over after the club entered administration, and took a 12 point deduction as a result, leaving it with minus six points at the foot of the table.
It was a fourth straight defeat for Henrik Pedersen's side, a reminder that it is not just off the pitch where the club has problems, but very much on it, too.
First-half goals from Will Lankshear and a Cameron Brannagan gave the U's a two-goal lead, which was cut to one when Sean Fusire scored early in the second half.
Jamal Lowe might have equalied for the hosts but missed his opportunity by shooting straight at the goalkeeper later in the second half, leaving Wednesday 16 points from safety.
While the result dampened the mood of the home supporters, Pedersen said it was a huge boost to his side to see them back.
“I must talk about the fans, they were fantastic," the Dane said.
“We asked them to come out in their numbers and wow, this they did and the atmosphere was amazing.
“From all of us, we say a big, big thank you.
“They gave us something special and while I am disappointed we did not give them the points, I hope they can see that the boys are giving absolutely everything.
For Oxford, a second victory in three games move it four points clear of the bottom three as it climbed one place to 19th.
