The 10 worst penalty kicks ever
As the football world toasts the shear audacity of Lionel Messi's cheeky penalty kick pass to Luis Suarez, we took a moment to celebrate those moments when things don't quite go to plan from the spot.
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are the toast of the football world after doing this against Celta Vigo this morning:
An homage to this from Ajax stars Johan Cruyff and Jesper Olsen in 1982:
The audacious manoeuvre captured the imagination of the football community, but it also conjures memories of when things don't quite go to plan from the penalty spot.
Here are 10 of the best, or worst depending how you look at it, occasions a player will be regretting the moment the ref pointed to the spot.
10. Pires and Henry
Coming in at 10 is the Arsenal duo who attempted to emulate Cruyff, but really just produced crud.
9. Neymar
Messi and Suarez's team-mate, Neymar, suggested that Messi's pass was actually intended for him. Maybe Luis Suarez had this vision in mind when he raced in front of his team-mate.
Neymar's howler was last spotted orbiting the earth.
8. Pilo
At least Neymar kicked it the right way. Not to be confused with 'Pirlo' - who's not immune to a bad penalty himself - is Brazilian state league battler Pilo, a man whose penalty spot gaffe defied physics, somehow flying backwards off his boot.
7. Eric Cantona
Even the world's very best can get a bit too cute from the penalty spot. Take Manchester United and France legend Eric Cantona for example, whose shot failed to even reach the goal-mouth.
6. Francesco Totti
...Or Francesco Totti, who well and truly let the 'keeper off the hook with this tame effort for Roma.
5. Gary Lineker
The England goal-scoring record was on the line when Gary Lineker stepped up against brazil in 1992. And promptly stepped away in embarrassment.
4. Alessandro Del Piero
Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero's heart just wan't in it against Aston Villa the final of the 2009 Peace Cup, whatever that is.
3. Roberto Baggio
John Terry's gaffe from the spot may have cost his side the 2008 UEFA Champions League title, but Roberto Baggio's cost Italy the 1994 World Cup...
2. Amir Sayoud
For shear embarrassment, Al Ahly's Amir Sayoud's howler from the spot must rank as one of the greatest penalty fails of all time.
1. Peter Devine
It has to be a pretty bad penalty to top the moment a puddle befuddled Lancaster City's peter Devine
