The Matildas came into the match as heavy underdogs and grew in confidence after withstanding a strong start from United States.

USWNT's Megan Rapinoe carved out the first chance of the match in the 11th minute, forcing Lydia Williams into a superb reflex save.

Struggling to break down the Matildas, United States brought on Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan in the 64th minute, but it was the Matildas who broke the deadlock two minutes later through Tameka Butt.

The 26 year-old pounced on a poor clearance from United States and steered the ball past Alyssa Naeher.

United States looked for an immediate response through Carli Lloyd, but Lydia Williams saved the day parrying away the stinging strike.

Next up for the Matildas, is a clash with Japan on Monday morning (AEST).
