London City Lionesses secure landmark signing of Putellas
London City Lionesses have another big-name signing joining the squad, with World Cup winner Alexia Putellas the latest to put pen to paper.
Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has signed for the London City Lionesses following her departure from Barcelona.
Putellas spent 14 years at Barca, winning 38 major honours in that time, including four Champions Leagues and 10 Liga F titles.
But she has now made the switch to the Women's Super League, agreeing a three-year deal in a landmark signing for the Lionesses.
"I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses," said Putellas.
"The club's ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me.
"I look forward to making an impact on the pitch as we challenge for titles.
"Off the pitch, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to work with Michele in elevating women's football in England and on the global stage."
Putellas made 507 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, second only to Melanie Serrano (516), while her 232 goals are the most for the women's team.
Across both the men's and women's sides, only Lionel Messi (672) has netted more for the club.
She also won the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and was part of the side beaten by England in the Euro 2025 final.
It has already been a bumper summer for the Lionesses, who have already signed former England goalkeeper Mary Earps as well as Grace Geyoro, Delphine Cascarino, and Spain defender Jana Fernandez.
The Lionesses finished their maiden WSL campaign in sixth last term, and owner Michelle Kang is targeting even more success going forward.
"This is more than a signing; it is a bold statement about the future of the sport," she said.
"Together, we will compete at the highest levels while creating new commercial opportunities and development pathways for the next generation of female athletes."
