Copa Libertadores Final to Award Biggest Prize in the World!
The champion of the tournament will pocket this astronomical figure just for winning the final. What would you do with so many millions?
The final match of the 2024 Copa Libertadores will be "the highest-paid in the world," with a prize of $23 million for the champion, announced Alejandro Domínguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), on Monday.
"The final of this year's Copa Libertadores will have a prize of $23 million for the champion, regardless of everything else it may accumulate (in the competition)," stated the leader.
Domínguez confirmed that Conmebol will increase the prize for the champion of this centennial edition of the tournament by $5 million.
In this way, added Domínguez, the final of the Copa Libertadores will become from this year on the "highest-paid match in the world" or "with the biggest prize."
The head of the South American football governing body spoke during a ceremony in the Paraguayan city of Luque, where the group stages of the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana were drawn.
Furthermore, among other increases approved by the Conmebol Council as part of the policy to "bet on the winner," he assured that the prize in the Sudamericana for the winner of each match in the group stage will increase from $100,000 to $110,000, while in the Libertadores it will rise from $300,000 to $330,000 per match.
Domínguez celebrated that since 2016, when he took over the leadership of Conmebol, the prizes have increased from a total amount of $70 million in prizes in both championships to "a record of $316 million that will be distributed in this cycle in both championships."
On the other hand, he celebrated that the Sudamericana has seen a 450% growth in its audience, while the audience for the Libertadores - which he described as the "oldest club cup in the world and the only one with its own name" - grew by 48%.
