The Incredible Gift From the President of Nigeria to the Super Eagles
Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, welcomed the national team in Abuja and gifted each player with an apartment and a plot of land, despite their loss in the final of the recent Africa Cup of Nations against tournament hosts, Ivory Coast, with a score of 2-1.
"It's not easy to accept a loss, especially when expectations are high, but you have shown sportsmanship, resilience, and team spirit throughout the tournament," Tinubu said to the players of the national team at the Nigerian Presidency headquarters.
"As a team, you have taught us lessons about resilience, unity, diversity, and excitement in competitive games," added the president. Despite their defeat in the final, Tinubu expressed being "proud" of the team and thanked them for their "good work."
Nigerian authorities immediately provided the "Super Eagles" with forms to allocate the promised land. The national team coach, Portuguese José Peseiro, former assistant to Queiroz at Real Madrid, thanked the Nigerian president for this gesture towards the players.
"I'm 60 years old, and this is the first time a president has invited me to his house. It's an honor and a pride for me," he declared. "I think we've done a fantastic job. Our team showed very good spirit and played well," he added.
