Rain forced an early finish for the Miami Open on Friday, after Stan Wawrinka survived a scare versus Carlos Berlocq at the ATP 1000 event.

Berlocq, who is ranked 60 spots below Wawrinka, won the first set against the Swiss seventh seed but could not convert his promising start into a victory, as he lost 6-7 (9-11) 7-5 6-2.

Wawrinka had to serve to stay in the match at 5-4 down in the second set but held to love, as he won three straight games to force a third set.

The 29-year-old broke Berlocq in the opening game of the deciding set and the world number 68 from Argentina never recovered, as Wawrinka stormed to a 5-1 lead.

Berlocq held serve in a mammoth seventh game but Wawrinka served out the contest with his fourth match to win in two hours, 52 minutes.

The weather played a key role on Friday, with rain forcing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's clash with Tim Smyczek to be postponed, while strong winds wreaked havoc on earlier matches.

Fernando Verdasco versus James Duckworth and Adrian Mannarino's clash with Albert Ramos were halted midway through.

Despite the windy conditions, second seed Rafael Nadal cruised past fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-2 in one hour, 30 minutes.

"In general, I think I played a solid match," Nadal told the ATP Tour's website.

"I played well. I had good movement. I had to put the balls in and play with no mistakes. That was the idea today with very tough conditions."

Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych also advanced to the third round in Florida.

Third seed Murray won the opening four games of his clash with Donald Young and leapt out to a 5-1 lead in the second set to triumph 6-4 6-2, while eighth seed Berdych had to recover from 4-1 down in the second set of his match against Hyeon Chung to win 6-3 6-4.

Feliciano Lopez was the only seed not to win, as the Spanish 10th seed was eliminated 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-3 by Dominic Thiem.

Kevin Anderson, Santiago Giraldo, Bernard Tomic, Leonardo Mayer and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez all advanced.
