Nadal survives Swiss scare against Rosol
Lukas Rosol looked set to record his second victory over Rafael Nadal on Monday, but the 14-time grand slam champion ultimately triumphed.
Rafael Nadal survived a major scare at the hands of Lukas Rosol before squeezing into round two of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Monday.
The most famous victory of Rosol's career came when he claimed a stunning five-set triumph over Nadal at Wimbledon in 2012.
On this occasion, however, the world number 69 twice faltered with the winning line in sight, failing to serve out the match in set two before giving up a 3-0 lead in the decisive tie-break as Nadal eventually prevailed 1-6 7-5 7-6 (7-4).
Fourteen-time grand slam champion Nadal punched the air with delight as Rosol sent a backhand long to bring an end to a tense encounter lasting two hours and 16 minutes.
The Spaniard struggled badly with his own serve and failed to make an impact on his opponent's during a one-sided first set.
However, as Nadal gradually raised his level after being broken at the start of set two, Rosol's error count started to rise and the latter was broken for the first time as he served for victory at 5-4.
Another Nadal break swiftly followed, levelling the contest, but Rosol showed his character by coming from 3-0 down in the third set to force a breaker.
Unforced errors from the third seed then put Rosol in control, but he failed to capitalise and became noticeably tight on his forehand as the match slipped from his grasp.
Dominic Thiem and Adrian Mannarino also came from a set down to book their places in round two on Monday.
Thiem lost the first set of his match with Robin Haase 6-0, before taking the second on a tie-break and edging the decider 7-5, while qualifier Mannarino recorded a 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Viktor Troicki.
