Murray maintains clay form to move past Sousa
Andy Murray's impressive clay form continued at Roland Garros with victory in four sets against Joao Sousa.
Andy Murray joined Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in progressing to the French Open third round on Thursday, with a 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-1 victory over Joao Sousa at Roland Garros.
Murray has found form on clay in recent weeks - winning tournaments in Munich and Madrid - and the third seed overcame a second-set blip to extend his winning streak to 12 matches.
Sousa, a finalist on clay at the Geneva Open, battled hard but was unable to prevent Murray from booking a tie with Nick Kyrgios.
In a 13-minute opening game, Murray wasted four break-point opportunities before moving ahead and the Brit moved a step closer to victory with another break in the seventh.
Murray hit 10 winners in moving a set to the good but struggled to shake off his Portuguese opponent in the second.
The pair matched each other for six games before Sousa broke twice to claim his first set against Murray - in their sixth career meeting.
Sousa continued to ask questions of the world number three until Murray broke in the seventh game of set three.
A missed set point in the ninth game was quickly forgotten when Murray produced a fierce ace to move within a set of the third round.
It proved a key moment for the British number one as he dominated much of the final set - hitting eight winners - to end Sousa's resistance and continue his unbeaten run.
Murray will face Kyrgios in the third round after the Australian was awarded a walkover against British qualifier Kyle Edmund, who withdrew due to a stomach injury.
