Muguruza dumped out on WTA return in Toronto
Garbine Muguruza failed to find the form that saw her reach the Wimbledon final as she was knocked out of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.
Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza's return to the WTA Tour ended in a surprising defeat as she was beaten in straight sets by Lesia Tsurenko.
The Spaniard was the surprise package at the All England Club as she reached her maiden grand slam final, her run eventually ended as Serena Williams cruised to the title 6-4 6-4.
Having taken time off since the grass court season, the 21-year-old was back in action on Wednesday in the second round of the Rogers Cup but her return did not go to plan.
Muguruza – given a first-round bye as the eighth seed in Toronto – had looked in control of the opening set at 5-3, but Tsurenko rallied to win four games in a row and move ahead.
Tsurenko maintained that momentum at the start of the second set as she rattled off five successive games, before completing a 7-5 6-1 win and sealing Muguruza's exit.
