Jovanovski recovers in Tashkent, Beck cruises through
Former champion Bojana Jovanovski survived an early scare to beat seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko in the Tashkent Open first round.
Bojana Jovanovski's impressive form at the Tashkent Open continued on Tuesday as she came from a set down to beat seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko.
Jovanovski was the 2013 champion in Uzbekistan and went agonisingly close to repeating the feat 12 months ago, only to lose in the final against Karin Knapp.
Her 2015 campaign got off to a shaky start as Ostapenko took four of the opening five games thanks to two breaks of serve, the Latvian going on to convert her fourth set point to move ahead.
That was as good as it got for the world number 78, though, as Jovanovski rallied at the start of the second on her way to levelling the match.
Nerves were on show from both players at the start of the decider and it needed a crucial break in the 12th game of the set for Jovanovski to secure her win.
She will meet Aleksandra Krunic in round two after her 6-2 6-4 victory over Anett Kontaveit, one of nine straight-set wins on day two of competition.
Top seed Annika Beck was one of those cruising into the second round as she beat Elizaveta Kulichkova 6-3 6-1, with fourth seed Johanna Larsson also getting through without any worry against Stefanie Voegele.
Evgeniya Rodina, Kateryna Kozlova, Katerina Siniakova, Jana Cepelova and last year's semi-finalist Nigina Abduraimova complete the list of players progressing without dropping a set.
Things were not so easy for eighth seed Andreea Mitu, though, as she came unstuck against Yaroslavav Shvedova, the latter winning 7-5 6-3 to set up a clash with Rodina.
Another seed to make an early exit was Polona Hercog, the third seed throwing away a first-set lead against Aliaksandra Sasnovich to lose 4-6 6-3 6-3.
Elsewhere, Donna Vekic will meet Carina Witthoeft next after she recovered from a poor second set to beat Kiki Bertens 6-3 1-6 6-3.
