Ivanovic returns to Roland Garros quarters
Former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic is into the quarter-finals of the competition after victory over Ekaterina Makarova.
Ana Ivanovic is into the French Open quarter-finals for the first time since winning the competition in 2008 - after getting past Ekaterina Makarova in three sets on Sunday.
The Serb came through 7-5 3-6 6-1 against her fellow top-10 opponent to reach the last eight.
Ivanovic, who had not faced world number nine Makarova since the Australian Open four years ago, was on the back foot straight away as the Russian broke early to move 2-0 ahead.
While Ivanovic recovered to assume the lead, the match was then halted due to rain in the French capital.
Ivanovic nevertheless claimed the first set, only for four double-faults over the course of the second to help Makarova draw level.
Makarova converted each of the break-point opportunities that came her way in the second set, before Ivanovic finished the match with a flourish.
Nine winners and three unforced errors in the decider helped her to break Makarova three times, and she pounced on a mediocre serve to power a forehand cross-court winner and convert match point at the first attempt.
Ivanovic will face Elina Svitolina next, after the Ukrainian ensured her first grand slam quarter-final place with victory over home favourite Alize Cornet.
