Gasparyan caps breakthrough run with Baku success
Margarita Gasparyan claimed the Baku Cup against another surprise package in the form of Patricia Maria Tig on Sunday.
Margarita Gasparyan claimed her first WTA title at the Baku Cup as she saw off the challenge of Romanian qualifier Patricia Maria Tig in three sets.
The pair were both highly unfancied at the start of the competition in Azerbaijan - Gasparyan having never won a WTA match before this week while Tig only made her main-draw debut in Bucharest in June.
However, Gasparyan held off a battling effort from the world number 154 - eventually proving too strong in a 6-3 5-7 6-0 success.
Tig knocked out top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semis and was seeking to become the lowest-ranked player to win a WTA title this year.
And, while she dropped serve twice to concede the first set, Tig battled back from 5-4 down in the second to level matters.
However, Gasparyan - who beat second seed Karin Knapp on Saturday - took advantage as Tig ran out of steam.
Despite spurning six break points and two match points in the final set, Gasparyan always seemed on course to see out the victory and record a first competition win on the tour.
