Ferrer continues London charge with Vienna win, Tsonga beaten
Top seed David Ferrer booked his Erste Bank Open quarter-final spot on Thursday to strengthen his bid to make the ATP World Tour Finals.
David Ferrer kept his hopes of a place at the ATP World Tour Finals alive with a comprehensive straight-sets win over Jerzy Janowicz at the Erste Bank Open.
The Spaniard currently occupies the eighth and final spot for the season-ending tournament in London, but his place has yet to be secured.
Ferrer did those hopes no harm in the second round on Thursday as he crushed fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-1 in 62 minutes.
Ferrer will now meet Fabio Fognini in the last eight after the Italian had an equally comfortable day, brushing aside the experienced Radek Stepanek 6-1 6-4.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will not be in the latter stages in Vienna, though, after he was dumped out by Lukas Rosol - aiding Ferrer's quest for a place in London.
Tsonga looked to have wrestled back control of the match when he levelled in the second set, but his game disappeared in the decider as Rosol took the final five games to win 6-4 3-6 6-1.
Up next for the Czech is Gael Monfils after he brushed aside the threat of Paolo Lorenzi, the sixth seed coasting to a 6-4 6-4 triumph.
The fourth quarter-final will see big servers Kevin Anderson, the second seed, and Steve Johnson go head-to-head after both came through three-set matches.
Anderson fired down 15 aces as he came from behind to beat Jiri Vesely 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 7-5, while Johnson went five better on his way past Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4.
