Djokovic demolishes Bautista Agut
Robert Bautista Agut was no match for Novak Djokovic, who picked up a 6-2 6-1 win at the Madrid Open.
Novak Djokovic reached the Madrid Open quarter-finals in a hurry as Roberto Bautista Agut was dispatched in straight sets.
Djokovic spent just 68 minutes on court as he picked up a 6-2 6-1 victory, hitting top form on clay for the first time this season after a second-round defeat to Jiri Vesely in Monte Carlo out of his mind.
With a 100 per cent record against the Spaniard behind him, the world number one never looked in any trouble, despite Bautista Agut's attempts to push the pace early on.
Big-hitting Bautista Agut's all-or-nothing approach gained him favour with the home crowd and also helped him save three break points in game five.
But a fourth was too much to ask, Djokovic sending a top-spinning cross-court shot into the corner to seize the initiative, before a brutal backhanded first-serve return racked up another break two games later.
Djokovic's use of the slice shot to stem Bautista Agut's power led to the breakthrough in the second set and the Serbian found top gear to put the result beyond doubt, gliding across the baseline as his opponent was left chasing shadows.
As Bautista Agut wilted, Djokovic brought out some of his party pieces, a sliding backhand pass and another crushing return serving a warning to the top seed's title rivals.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Milos Raonic will be next up for Djokovic, who is enthused by his form, having beaten Borna Coric 6-2 6-4 last time out.
He told Sky Sports: "Obviously I played better than my first match. I still haven't dropped a serve in this tournament and only faced one break point so that definitely gives me confidence and encourages me.
"The conditions in Madrid played a bit different, it definitely affects the ball travelling in the air – it's quicker and bounces higher, but today with cloudy conditions I could go through the ball more so it was a very pleasing performance."
