Alexandri sisters claim synchronised swimming silver
Synchorinsed swimmers Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri secured a silver medal at the European Games on Monday.
Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri won synchronised swimming silver medals at the European Games on Monday, just four days after three of their team-mates were hit by a bus.
The Alexandri sisters were commended for taking part in the preliminary round of the free duet a day after teenagers Vanessa Sahinovic, Luna Pajer and Verena Brei were injured in an incident in the athletes village last Thursday.
They then rose to the occasion on Monday, finishing second behind Russian duo Valeriya Filenkova and Daria Kulagina at the Baku Aquatic Centre to claim silver in the duets.
There were emotional scenes on Saturday as Austria's synchronised swimmers completed their free combination routine.
Sahinovic, Pajer and Breit - all aged 15 - would have been involved at the weekend, but were absent as a depleted Austrian team of six competed.
It was revealed on Friday that Sahinovic was in an induced coma following surgery in Vienna and must undergo further operations, but her condition is not life-threatening.
Sahinovic has serious injuries to her pelvis, thighs and spine.
Pajer was also flown back to her homeland after suffering an arm injury, which was on Friday confirmed as a fracture.
Breit bruised her right thigh and was able to return to the athletes village.
The Austrian Olympic Committee released a statement at the weekend revealing the driver of the bus had tested negative for drugs and alcohol, but said initial indications were that he had mistaken the accelerator for the brake pedal.
It is claimed the driver immediately admitted his guilt and was taken into custody.
