O'Donnell to miss Rugby World Cup
Ireland have been dealt a blow with the news that flanker Tommy O'Donnell will miss the Rugby World Cup due to a dislocated hip.
Tommy O'Donnell has been forced out of the Rugby World Cup after dislocating his hip in Ireland's 35-21 victory over Wales on Saturday.
The flanker was injured when he was tackled by Alex Cuthbert, and the Irish Rugby Football Union confirmed in a brief statement on Monday that O'Donnell's hopes of featuring in the global showpiece had been dashed.
"Investigations at University Hospital Wales yesterday afternoon confirmed that Tommy O'Donnell suffered a hip dislocation in the game against Wales," the statement read.
"He will be limited to non-weight bearing activity for at least six weeks and has unfortunately been ruled out of participating in the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
"Meanwhile, Andrew Trimble will have a a precautionary scan on the foot injury he sustained against Wales."
It is more negative news for coach Joe Schmidt, who has already seen O'Donnell's fellow flanker Rhys Ruddock ruled out of the tournament with a broken right arm.
