Trevor Fisher Jr held off the challenge of Matt Ford to become the sixth successive South African winner of the Africa Open.

An eight-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, Fisher Jr hit a field-leading eight-under final round of 64 to claim his maiden European Tour triumph.

The victory maintained the winning run of home contenders at the event, which has never been won by a foreign player.

And, for the second year running, it was an Englishman who finished as runner-up, with Ford failing to reel in Fisher Jr - finishing five shots short.

Fisher Jr went into the final day with a two-stroke advantage, and matched Ford blow for blow over the first four holes, before slipping up with a bogey at the fifth.

The South African pulled level for the day with a birdie on the ninth as Ford missed a six-foot putt to par and stole a march by gaining another shot as the players hit the back nine.

Further gains on the 15th and 16th afforded Fisher Jr the luxury of a five-stroke advantage heading into the last - a lead he preserved as both players birdied the 18th.

Jorge Campillo had initially looked capable of muscling in on the two-horse race for the title, but - after a blistering six-under front nine - fell away to finish eight strokes adrift of Fisher Jr.

The Spaniard was one of three players tied for third, along with compatriot Eduardo de la Riva and Morten Orum Madsen of Denmark.

Kevin Phelan, who held a share of the lead on day one, ended the tournament tied for 60th, having failed to live up to the promise of his opening round.
