Castleford Tigers kickstarted their Super League campaign on Friday with a sensational 42-14 thrashing of Wigan Warriors, last year's beaten grand finalists.

Daryl Clark's Castleford, the surprise package of the 2014 campaign, had made an underwhelming start to the new season, losing each of their first three matches.

However, the Tigers returned to winning ways in some style against a Wigan side missing the NRL-bound Joe Burgess, who was dropped following a shaky start to the campaign and is set to play on dual registration for Workington Town over the weekend.

Wigan found themselves 16-0 down inside 15 minutes and were unable to recover, with Justin Carney scoring two of Castleford's seven tries and Luke Gale landing seven goals.

Elsewhere on Friday, reigning champions St Helens overcame a host of injuries to triumph 20-16 at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and maintain their 100 per cent Super League record in 2015.

Saints lost Jonny Lomax, Luke Thompson and Mark Percival during the first half, limiting their interchange options for the remainder of the match.

Tries from Matty Ashurst and Reece Lyne put Wakefield on course for victory following Paul Wellens' opening score, but Saints fought back and crossed again through Joe Greenwood and Jordan Turner prior to Tommy Makinson landing a penalty.

Richard Owen's late try set up a grandstand finish, but the visitors held on in the face of mounting pressure.

Huddersfield Giants emulated Castleford by picking up their first points of the campaign courtesy of a 24-12 home win over Widnes Vikings.
