Wigan claim spoils in first Super 8 clash
Having trailed 10-0 after just 12 minutes, Wigan Warriors battled back to defeat Huddersfield Giants in the first Super 8 fixture.
George Williams and Liam Farrell inspired Wigan Warriors to overcome a sluggish start and beat Huddersfield Giants 30-22 in the Super League's opening Super 8 fixture at the DW Stadium.
In the first game in the revamped end-of-season schedule, Giants made a storming start to lead 10-0 after just 12 minutes thanks to a Jermaine McGillvary brace.
But Farrell and Williams turned the game on its head with a try apiece, the latter also weighing in with two assists, before Dom Crosby crossed late on to end a spirited Huddersfield fightback that gathered momentum when Eorl Crabtree pegged the hosts back to 24-22.
It took a pair of virtually identical tries from McGillvary to shock Wigan into life, the first coming amid strong suspicions of a forward pass from Leroy Cudjoe before the duo combined again down the right.
A slaloming Farrell run after fancy footwork and turn of pace sent him clear as Wigan made it 10-6 just after the half-hour mark, just reward for a positive response to their early battering.
Huddersfield conceded a series of penalties early in the second half that cranked the pressure up on the visitors and that paid off for Wigan as Dom Manfredi stooped low to take Williams' pass and jink inside from the left wing.
Matty Smith's third conversion of the night put the hosts ahead for the first time in the match and two minutes later Williams finished off Farrell's surge upfield from inside his own half.
Jack Hughes took two Wigan players over the whitewash with him as Huddersfield hit back to make to 18-16 to the hosts, who extended their lead when a fabulous inside Williams pass put in Larne Patrick.
A grandstand finish was assured by Crabtree eight minutes from the end, but Crosby made sure Wigan sealed the two points as they seek to go one better than reaching the Grand Final last season.
