The Detroit Red Wings were eliminated from the NHL play-offs at the first round after losing 1-0 in game five against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Red Wings looked set to complete a shutout and force the game into overtime on Thursday before Alex Killorn scored his third goal of the Eastern Conference series with less than two minutes remaining to break Detroit hearts.

Killorn scored the game-winner with a redirection after some superb work from Ryan Callahan, who dumped the puck behind the net and drew Petr Mrazek out of crease.

Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop made 34 saves to deny the Red Wings, helping Tampa Bay to the second round of the Stanley Cup play-offs for the second season running.

Defending champions the Chicago Blackhawks survived a real scare to push their series against the St Louis Blues to a sixth game after winning 4-3 in overtime.

Patrick Kane scored the winner in the second period of overtime to keep the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup defence alive.

The Blackhawks were 3-1 up leading into the third period thanks to goals from Marian Hossa, Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin.

But goals from Robby Fabbri and David Backes for the Blues forced the contest into OT, where just one goal would be enough to end the Blackhawks title defence.

But Kane came up with the goods when he scored his fifth play-off overtime-winner, producing some amazing stick work to navigate a packed Blues defence before flicking the puck into the back of the net to keep the Blackhawks in the Western Conference series, which they trail 3-2.

The Pittsburgh Penguins edged closer to the Eastern Conference second round with a 5-0 thrashing of the New York Rangers.

Patric Hornqvist scored his fourth of the series as the Penguins boasted five different scorers on the night.

The Penguins now lead 3-1 and are one win away from moving into the next round.

Meanwhile in the West, the Anaheim Ducks came out on top against the Nashville Predators, winning 4-1 to tie the series at 2-2.
