Nelson hurt in Packers' pre-season loss
Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson suffered a worrying injury during the NFL pre-season on Sunday.
The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers both had starters leave in the first half of their pre-season game at Heinz Field.
The most significant injury was to Packers receiver Jordy Nelson, who left the game on Green Bay's first series with a reported ACL injury.
Pittsburgh later lost Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey, whose left ankle was rolled onto during a running play.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after the game that Pouncey will likely require surgery to repair a broken bone.
Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt (sprained ankle) and Packers guard T.J. Lang (concussion) were injured on consecutive plays in the second quarter.
Tuitt will miss a couple weeks, but there was no timetable given for how long Lang will be sidelined.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was perfect on Green Bay's first possession, which ended with a seven-yard Eddie Lacy touchdown run.
The Steelers eventually won the game, but the 24-19 score was irrelevant.
Also on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers overcame the Dallas Cowboys 23-6 and the Tennessee Titans were 27-14 winners over the St Louis Rams.
INJURY ROUND-UP
Steelers back-up quarterback Bruce Gradkowski left Sunday's game before half-time with a finger injury on his left hand and did not return.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin confirmed Sunday that safety Bennett Jackson suffered a torn ACL during Saturday's 22-12 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coughlin also said linebacker Jon Beason has a sprained knee.
IMPACT ROOKIES
Titans rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota was steady in his second pre-season game, completing five of eight passes for 59 yards and compiling an 89.4 quarterback rating in the team's win over the Rams.
Former Australian rugby league star Jarryd Hayne was spectacular on Sunday. He returned three punts for 84 yards in the first half and rushed for 54 yards (including a 34-yard burst) on eight carries in the 49ers' 23-6 win over the Cowboys.
The Steelers are really liking what former Auburn receiver Sammie Coates has been doing. He had two catches for 60 yards on Sunday, including a 54-yard reception that set up a third-quarter field goal.
